Volkswagen may revive 200-mpg car project

VW's 1-Liter Car - Rear

Remember the “1 Liter Car” from Volkswagen?

Company officials unveiled the concept car in 2002 and said it could get 235 miles per U.S. gallon.  It was later shelved by Volkswagen after they realized it would be too expensive.

Well it looks as though the company is recommitting to the 200+ mpg project.

Board chair Ferdinand Piëch says it can be done — that advances in materials and a reduction in associated costs have put plans for a super-efficient small Volkswagen back on the table.

According to Piëch, one supplier says the components can now be had for around $6,775, not $47,400 as had been calculated.
