The yellow school bus turns green

IC Corporation, the nation's largest school bus manufacturer, developed this plug-in hybrid school bus. The buses can improve fuel efficiency by 70-100% and reduce diesel emissions by up to 90 percent.

The nation’s largest school bus manufacturer says its plug-in hybrid school bus can improve fuel efficiency by 70-100 percent and reduce diesel emissions by up to 90 percent.

And thankfully, this is no concept vehicle.  A Bradenton, Fla. school district became proud owners of the nation’s first two plug-in hybrid school buses just last month.

“The school-bus industry is usually 10 to 12 years behind,” says Bill Schroyer, director of fleet management for the Florida Department of Education. “It was a surprise to see them do this and jump ahead. From the plug-in standpoint, we’re ahead of the auto industry.”

The bus manufacturer, IC Corporation, has orders for 19 plug-in buses from districts in 11 states – including Washington, California, Texas, Iowa, Arkansas, and North Carolina.
