Water tower living

Danish architectural firm Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter has come up with an ingenius way to conceal unsightly water towers — wrap cool-looking apartments around them.

The firm won honorable mention in this year’s coveted Architectural Review Awards for Emerging Architecture.  The awards were announced this month.

Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter fitted 40 apartments and a youth center around the tower.  Its floor-to-ceiling windows provide great views from the inside and a modernistic feel from the outside.  The top porton of the tower still actually holds water.

Water towers are necessary eye sores, but hopefully Mandrup’s design will catch on in the States and beyond.  The firm has two different plans to convert water towers.
